Opening Ceremony
Tournament Activities & Prize Winners

June 9, 2022: After months of planning and outreach to the San Angelo Community, the American Legion Post 572 and Tom Green County All Veterans Council sponsored annual Memorial Day Weekend Golf Tournament was held at the Quicksand Golf Course on May 28/29, 2022. Fourteen teams signed up to play the two-day 36-hole tournament. They were supported by businesses and organizations that sponsored each hole. Sponsors also placed IN MEMORY OF yard sign(s) featuring their selected deceased veteran on their sponsored hole. Please check out the company emblems displayed on the sponsor banner above...and when you have the opportunity to do business with them, please thank them personally for their support.

This event, especially the opening ceremony, featured specific segments that reminded attendees about the true meaning and reasons for the observance of Memorial Day on the last Monday of the month of May each year.  Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. At this event, the "BOOM" of the Civil War-era cannons, the folding of the US flag by USMC students attending technical training at Goodfellow Air Force Base, and the special IN MEMORY OF signs set the mood at the very beginning of the event. The combined efforts of Post 572 and AVC members and associated volunteers helped improve the awareness of local veteran needs and their involvement in so many outreach projects. This was also their annual fundraiser with all proceeds committed to programs providing assistance to veterans in need, mentoring youth, improving this veteran-based community, and honoring all those who served...especially those who died in service to this great nation. An impressive lesson in Memorial Day History. The pictures by Carol Holbert Photography serve as a wonderful record of this popular event.

We extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to each of the sponsors, the players, the spectators...and so many volunteers.

See you next year.
