Smith-Bryant Post 572

Message from the Post Commander, Kristie Young, SFC, US Army (Ret)

Legionaires,

Time sure flies when you’re busy! Following the success of the District Convention, we have hit the ground running with preparations for the 4th Annual Golf Tournament, interviews for Boys and Girls State, and other events coming up in the next couple of months.

Thanks to financial assistance from Post 32 and other generous donors, not only are we going to be able to send 3 young men to Texas Boys State, but Auxiliary Unit 572 will be sending 8 young women to Texas Bluebonnet Girls State! This is the second year in a row we have sponsored 3 candidates to Boys State and the first year the Auxiliary is sponsoring attendees to TBGS. We will be looking to hold a joint meeting with the Auxiliary in August to invite these participants to share their experience with Post and Unit members as well as the school principals, counselors, and teachers that encouraged them to apply.

May is one of the busiest months for the Post. First, our normal meeting day changes to the 2nd Saturday, 11 May at 10am at the Elks Lodge. We need to get maximum participation at this meeting as we will be voting on officers for 2024-2025 year. Please plan on attending this meeting. The elections are your opportunity to select the Post leadership and set the course for the upcoming year. While many of the current Post officers are running again for their positions, anyone whose membership is in good standing (2024 dues have been paid) may run for office. If you are interested in running for an office, please reach out to Post leadership and we will put you in contact with the Election Committee chairperson. At this meeting, we will also be finalizing any last minute details for the golf tournament.

On 18 May, we will hold our 4th Annual Golf Tournament! Hole sponsors and team sign-ups are coming in as we speak. If you know anyone interested in sponsoring a hole or team, please give them our website info so that they can register. We also place any In Memory of/In Honor of signs that are ordered by 10 May throughout the Golf course. We currently have 4 “baskets” for the silent auction and the Auxiliary is working on items/baskets for the raffle. We will need Legionnaires to assist with event set-up on 17 May in the evening and to run the holes on the 18th. We will have more details at the general meeting on 11 May.

Memorial Day weekend will close out the month with preparation of Belvedere cemetery for flag placement on Saturday, 25 May, and various events on Monday, 27 May, around San Angelo to honor those who served and never made it home. The observance of Memorial Day is not an easy day for many veterans as we remember friends and loved ones. BE THE ONE if you see someone who is struggling with the memories. Lending a hand, shoulder, or ear can go a long way in reminding us that we are not alone.

Take care and I hope to see you at some of our upcoming events.

Commander, Smith-Bryant Post 572
